LANCASHIRE cricket legend David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd will fascinate visitors to Accrington Stanley Football Club with a talk about his career.

The 68-year-old former Accrington, Lancashire and England star will host a business lunch to raise money for the club, where he is a director.

Accrington Stanley’s most famous fan said: “We are currently in the second half of our ninth season back in the Football League and while it is true that it hasn’t all been plain sailing, we continue to punch above our weight and prove to the footballing world that even as undoubtedly the smallest club at this level, we can still compete and still deserve our place amongst the top 92 sides in the country.”

Mr Lloyd, who launched the club’s latest fundraising appeal, will talk about his career, from starting out at Accrington Cricket Club to representing his country in Test matches on the world stage.

He said: “I will also share what an honour it is being associated with Accrington Stanley, and what being involved with my home town club means to me.

“As a cricketer I have represented Accrington, Lancashire, and England, and I now enjoy travelling the world as a commentator for Sky Sports. Whilst all this has been great, I have never lost sight of my roots, and I am very proud and privileged to be a director of my home town football club.”

The business lunch will kick-off at noon, and will also provide an opportunity to hear from visitors about how the club can improve its links with local businesses and organisations, Mr Lloyd said in written invitations sent our across Hyndburn.

He said: “This isn’t a hard sell event, you won’t be asked to bring your cheque books or put money into a bucket on the way out.

“We would simply like to spend a little time telling you our story and hopefully learning from you the ways in which we may be able to work together going forward.”

Following the lunchtime event, a ‘Sportsman’s Dinner’ will be held at the club, in Livingstone Road, from 7pm.

A three-course meal will be served, a stand-up comedian will be perform, and a raffle and auction will be held.

Mr Lloyd will also host a question and answer session.
