A 71-YEAR-OLD retired engineer was found dead at the foot of the stairs by police who forced entry after neighbours raised the alarm.
An inquest heard that Wilfred Handley, of Pleckgate Road, Blackburn, had not been seen for several days and police forced entry after seeing mail piled up behind the door.
PC Mark Perry told the inquest that he found Mr Handley lying at the foot of the stairs and he was clearly dead. There was a pool of what appeared to be blood on the floor. A post-mortem examination showed Mr Handley had died as a result of a traumatic retro-peritoneal haemorrhage.
Coroner Michael Singleton recorded a verdict of accidental death.
