A TREE expert from Darwen is returning to his roots to make a programme on the importance of trees in Whitehall Park.

Tony Kirkham, 49, is a world authority on trees and head of the arboretum at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

He will return to Whitehall Park as part of a new BBC television series, The Trees That Made Britain, which looks at the importance of trees and forests today.

It was while Tony was a member of the scout group at Whitehall Park doing his foresters' badge that he realised what he wanted to do as a career.

Tony has been asked by scout leader John East to plant a tree. They will be helped by the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

Tony said: "Nothing will give me greater satisfaction than planting a tree that I personally collected in China in the park that that brought me so close to trees."

The BBC will film on March 17 and it is thought the programme will be broadcast in September.
