CLITHEROE Royal Grammar School students past and present gathered at Blackburn’s King George’s Hall on Wednesday for the annual prize-giving evening.

Headteacher Judith Child praised the school’s successes over the last 12 months and what the students had achieved during the academic year.

Among the prize winners were Alexander Armstrong and Lucy Calderbank, who were among the students who won the Evelyn Garnett Prize for excellent GCSE results.

Oliver Barsby won The Clitheronian’s Prize for Academic Progress with Declan Boyd, Claire Maden, Saphina Stamford and Callum Thompson.

Mrs Child said: “Our school has truly gone from strength to strength in the last year.

“A recent article in the TES suggested that leaving schools for too long without external assessment could put standards at risk,” she added.

“This is certainly not the case at CRGS – I can assure you that our staff, students, parents and governors would not allow this to happen.

“We are constantly evaluating what is good and what can still be improved.

“As part of our regular and thorough self-evaluation we recently invited a school improvement professional to visit our school and validate our judgements.

“He was most impressed with the behaviour and attitudes of our students, the standards of teaching and the professionalism of our staff.

“Clitheroe Royal Grammar School is more than just a school; it is a warm and caring community.

“This is truly exemplified by the fact that so many former students and staff attend this evening.

“The future is looking bright for our oversubscribed, well-supported and outstanding school.”
