A DARWEN councillor has accused the town’s MP of being “disingenuous” in urging residents to object to a proposal to build 110 homes on land at Kirkham’s Farm off Cranberry Lane.

Marsh House councillor Frank Connor, who opposes the development, said: “Not for the first time Jake Berry is being disingenuous when it comes to planning matters.

“Again he says one thing when he is talking to people in Darwen but takes a completely different line when he is down in London overseeing planning legislation.

“For the record, the land is only in the council’s Local Plan because of national government policy encouraging development on Greenfield sites.

“This is because developers want virgin land which is cheaper to build on and is potentially more profitable and easier to sell.

“In addition, although he says there are alternatives, Jake Berry has never set out which sites he is referring to.

“On the other hand, the Marsh House councillors have continued to work with local residents to oppose this scheme.

“We have been consistent in supporting the residents in opposing the building of houses on the Kirkham’s Farm Land.”
