IT WAS family fun and bike safety at Witton Park on Sunday as grandparents, mums, dads and children turned up for a cycling and craft day.

More than 40 children and their parents attended the event organised by the Young Weavers’ cycling and family activity club.

Around 20 took part in four special safety rides around Witton Park’s mile track, complete with a talk on safety, the importance of wearing a helmet and how to fit them correctly.

The rest took part in a selection of craft activities in preparation of Mothers’ Day next Sunday.

It was part of Family Safety Week, organised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and supported by Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Young Weavers secretary Kevin Riddehough said: “We had more than 40 children in total.

“More than 20 took part in the rides including a family who came specially from Chorley.

“It was a great day of crafts and cycle safety.

“It’s really important to get the message across – especially about helmets.

“This was a good family fun way of doing it.

“We’ve got a couple of similar days planned as part of a full programme of events over the summer.”

Council highways boss Maureen Bateson said: “It was a really successful event and we were delighted with the turnout.

“It’s paramount that we teach children how to cycle safely.

“And we must show them how to wear the correct equipment to help families to safely enjoy quality, family time together.”
