Lancashire currently receives a lower than average number of nominations and actual honours, per head of for its its population.
Lord Shuttleworth, the Queen’s representative in the county, whose historic family seat is Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham, is encouraging people to make nominations.
He said: “We all know that there are people in Lancashire who are doing wonderful things and deserve to be recognised with an honour, but they do have to be nominated first.
“The honours system recognises individuals who have made life better for others or who are outstanding at what they do and have demonstrated exceptional service and achievement – people who go beyond their job.
“Anyone can nominate. You can do it online, using on the honours system website.
“I’d urge people to think about someone they know, including young people, and whether they would be deserving of recognition.”
Honours are given to people involved in different activities including: • Making a difference to their community or field of work; • Enhancing Britain’s reputation; • Long-term voluntary service; • Innovation and entrepreneurship; • Improving life for people less able to help themselves; and • Displaying moral courage.
Coun Hollern said: “I support Lord Shuttleworth. There are lots of people across Lancashire whose good work deserves recognition. In Blackburn with Darwen we do this with our ‘Good Neighbours’ awards but many of those good neighbours deserve national honours.”
Mr Stephenson said: “I want to see more people nominated and recognised nationally for the good work they do in Pendle and across East Lancashire.”
To nominate someone, go to www.gov.uk/honours or contact 0207 276 2777.
