EAST Lancashire suffered an early morning deluge of hailstones and snow, coupled with thunder and lightning.
Commuter traffic was slowed in its tracks as the hail then turned to snow in Blackburn, leaving a white covering in minutes.

Thundersnow, which also creates lightning, is almost the same a summer thunder storm, but snow falls instead of rain.
It happens when the atmosphere is unstable and the layer of air closest to the ground is cold enough to create snow, but still warmer than the air above it.
