ALMOST 50 new car parking spots to serve mosques in Burnley are planned.
Afrasiab Anwar, from the £1.5million Jamia Masjid Ghausia mosque in Abel Street, has requested permission for 46 spaces on land opposite Grey Street.
MORE TOP STORIES:
It would serve the Ghausia mosque, the Hussainia [Imam Bargah] Mosque, on the corner of Old Hall Street and Grey Street, and the Ghausia Centre, also in Abel Street, council documents show.
A 3ft wrought-iron fence would surround the car park and security-operated barriers would be in place.
The parking would be created on derelict land which once had terrace housing.
The total cost of the project is put at £82,400, documents show, including £1,100 for hardstanding, £64,400 for paving, kerbs, lighting and drainage, and between £14,000 and £18,000 for preliminary works, landscaping, and an access road.
More than 2,500 men from around the world attended the opening of the multi-million pound Jamia Masjid Ghausia mosque in 2009.
It was built to meet demand and was mainly financed by residents in Daneshouse.
It has prayer facilities over two floors, a room to accommodate 500 women worshippers, a meeting room, control room, library, community room, office rooms, wudu rooms to prepare for prayer, and classrooms.
