A MAN and four children were taken to hospital following a crash in Accrington.

The emergency services were called to Milnshaw Lane shortly after 3.30pm yesterday after a silver Subaru Impreza they were travelling in collided with the side of a Halfords Autocentre.

The driver, a man from Rossendale was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary by the North West Air Ambulance after suffering a head injury when his head hit the windscreen.

A child passenger suffered a broken leg and blow to the head was also airlifted to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

The two other children suffered minor head and leg injuries and were taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital, police said.

The nearby Aldi car park was closed after the air ambulance landed there.

The front bumper of the car was left half inside the store and the car had spun around and was facing the opposite direction across the road.

Crowds gathered to watch the clear up operation and to see the air ambulance land and take off.

Four ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and three police cars attended the incident.

Police cordoned off the area and closed the road while the scene was cleared and an investigation was launched.
