Detectives from the force’s major investigation team sealed off a large section of the towpath, from a car park near to the Anchor Inn to Kelbrook Road, while investigations continued.
But now police believe that her death may have been caused by a pre-existing medical condition.
A post-mortem examination was inconclusive in revealing an exact cause of death.
However no evidence was found of any violence, police have said.
A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “It is believed at this stage that she died from a medical condition.
“A 64-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the East Lancashire coroner.”
