LANCASHIRE’S chief fire officer and a charity stalwart have both received awards from UClan.
Fundraiser Margaret O’Donoghue from Longridge and Chris Kenny, Chief Fire Officer for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, were made Honorary Fellows of the university at a ceremony at Preston’s Guild Hall.
Grandmother-of-four, Margaret, is a founder member of St Catherine’s Hospice and the creator of Preston’s Cancer Help charity.
Margaret started training as a state registered nurse at the Royal Preston Hospital in 1956 and, after qualifying, acquired a number of specialist qualifications .
She then went on to acquire wide-ranging experience of oncological practice and cancer care.
In 1981, she became a founder member of St Catherine’s Hospice and subsequently became chairman of the board there.
Later that decade she established Cancer Help (Preston) Ltd and in 1990 she created Community Cancer Centre in Vine House.
Chris, originally from Liverpool, enrolled on UCLan’s fire engineering degree in 1992.
He followed that up with a Masters in Fire Command and Management at UCLan.
In 2000 Chris transferred to Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
In October 2012, he was appointed chief fire officer.
