TALENTED East Lancashire star Reece James enjoyed a dream debut as he netted twice for Manchester United in their 7-0 friendly win over LA Galaxy.

Left-back James, from Bacup, only joined the action as a half-time substitute but tucked away two neat finishes from inside the box as Louis van Gaal started life at Old Trafford in fine style.

James, 20, was one of nine changes at the break with United already leading 4-0 thanks to a Wayne Rooney brace and goals from Danny Welbeck and Ashley Young.

James made it five when he drilled a low shot home and added his second when he tucked away a rebound after Young’s shot was spilled. Young completed the rout late on with his second.

Van Gaal was delighted with the performance in his first match in charge – where he deployed former Blackburn Rovers defender Phil Jones as one of three centre backs.

“The result always matters. With such a result you get confidence,” the new United boss said.

“It is fantastic how they have performed today.

“When you see us train, you can expect something but not 7-0. It was a surprise, but they were beautiful goals and beautiful attacks.”

Defender James, who spent time on loan at Carlisle United last season, began playing football with Rossendale United and also spent time in the Blackburn Rovers youth system before moving to United.

He was captain of the reserve side last season and is brother of Leicester City midfielder Matty.

Blackburn Rovers target Michael Keane, who spent time on loan at Ewood Park last season, was also introduced from the bench at half time.

Rovers boss Gary Bowyer is keen to bring the 21-year-old back to East Lancashire but faces competition from Championship rivals Cardiff City while Van Gaal could also opt to retain his services at Old Trafford.
