But more officers were called when it became apparent that a man inside was armed with a knife.

Damage was caused to the front window of the house and there was concern the man had self-harmed, police said.

The man had blood on his arms, officers said.

No-one else was believed to be in the house.

Police surrounded the property and the man spoke to police negotiators through a window.

Residents looked on as a man was led out at around 9pm and was taken away in a police vehicle. He was arrested on suspicion of burglary, police said.

Insp Phil Hutchinson said: “It was resource-intensive because the welfare and safety of the person concerned was paramount.”

There were around eight police vehicles at the scene, some cordoning off access to the terraced street, and paramedics were on standby.
