A PROJECT has been launched in West Craven to honour every soldier who made the supreme sacrifice during the First World War.
Town councillors in Earby have proposed providing an individual cross to honour every local life lost during the conflict, as part of commemorations for the centenary of the war’s declaration.
Around 170 deaths are believed to have been suffered locally and the crosses will bear the name, regimental badge, date of death and age.
Town councillor Vera Cocker said: “Wherever possible, relatives will be asked to attend the Remembrance Sunday service on November 9 and during the service they will be asked to place the crosses in the memorial garden at the foot of the war memorial.”
The initiative is not the first to be undertaken by the town council to honour Earby’s military contributions.
For the past two years, special mementoes have been handed out to veterans.
If anyone has a relative or family member named on the cenotaph, they are asked to call Coun Cocker on 01282 842653.
