A 34-YEAR-OLD woman has been found dead in water at a quarry.
Family members reported the woman missing on Saturday afternoon after she failed to return to her Longridge home from a night out on Friday.
A search was launched and a body was found at 3am on Sunday in an area of water nearby.
A Home Office post mortem examination was due to be carried out to help investigators better understand the circumstances surrounding her death.
Insp Ilyas Mohmed said it was not believed there were any suspicious circumstances and no arrests had been made last night.
He said: “We are really very sad for the loss of the woman.
“She was reported missing to us by family about 5.15pm on Saturday.
“She had gone out the night before and not come home.
“Sadly, following extensive and specialist searches, the body of a woman was found in a large volume of water nearby.Her family has been informed.
“An investigation has been launched into the circumstances of her death which at this stage is being treated as unexplained.”
Police said they were unable to name the woman until she had been formally identified.
Fire crews from Darwen, Longridge and Preston were involved in recovering the body.
