A CLARETS legend who is suffering from incurable cancer tied the knot in front of family and friends from around the world.
Ian Britton, 58, who scored arguably the most important goal in Burnley’s history to keep them in the Football League in 1987, married Eileen Bayliss, 63, on Friday.
The couple wed, watched by around 60 family and friends, at the Registry Office in Todmorden Road, Burnley.
They then enjoyed a quick stop for champagne at Turner’s in Barrowford, before continuing the celebrations at the Cross Gaits in Blacko.
Ian was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year and has been told his condition cannot be fully cured.
He said: “It was a very special day. I was very nervous before but everything went off without a hitch and everybody had a good time.
“It was a very emotional day but it was good to be celebrating.”
The couple had friends and family from as far afield as Australia in attendance, as well as people who had travelled up from Portsmouth and London.
Fellow former Clarets Willie Irvine and Andy Lochhead attended the ceremony, as did Ian’s former Chelsea team-mate David Stride.
Eileen, who tied the knot in a cream knee-length dress and jacket, said: “I wasn’t nervous like Ian. It was very exciting planning the day and actually getting married.
“It was fantastic to have so many friends and family there.”
After the ceremony the couple travelled in a vintage white double-decker bus, which had ‘Congratulations Mr and Mrs Britton’ on the front.
They were planning to continue celebrations with family and friends until Monday, before heading off on honeymoon to Jersey.
Gareth Ostick, who co-owns Turner’s, said: “Ian and Eileen are great customers of ours. Eileen has helped us out in the past with some work.
“We wanted to do something for them on their special day and pass on our congratulations.”
