A PENSIONER has told of the moment he felt his house shake when it was hit by a driver – who then drove off.
Allan Presho was upstairs when the incident happened at his home, in Parker Street, Rishton.
The 79-year-old said: “I was in the bathroom at the time, and the house shook.
“When I came down everything looked all right.
“Then, when I went out later, I saw all the plaster on the ground.
“The window has skewed, and the door won’t close properly.
“Somebody said it was a taxi.
“It was a grey one apparently.
“It could have been fatal because schoolchildren walk past at that time.
“The driver has scarpered without stopping, or putting a note through the door.”
Mr Presho, who said the house was struck at around 8.15am on Tuesday, moved into the property in 1968 with his wife, Iris.
They took over a corner shop and served hot sandwiches and pastries to workers at Wheatfield Mill across the road, who piled into the shop during break times.
When the pair retired in 1999, the shop was converted to a home, where they lived together until Iris’ death earlier this year.
Mr Presho said he has seen cars on the street spin out of control in the past, and has called on the council to make the road safer to drive on.
“Parker Street, when there’s frost, is treacherous,” said Mr Presho.
“Yesterday, I went to Styropack, a business, which is down the street, and told the lady and asked them to put pressure on the council to get it gritted.”
Coun Ken Moss said: “I’ve had information about a car inspecting damage around the same time, and I’ve passed it to pol-ice.”
Mr Presho added: “The police are contacting the local taxi firms, and hopefully their pres-ence will mean whoever did it will come forward.”
Local police officers will carry out local inquiries, a police spokesman said.
Witnesses, or those with any information, can call 101 using log number LC-20131217-0361.
