WORK has started on Darwen's new £9million leisure centre as demolition surveyors move into the existing building.
The centre closed earlier this month after months of debate between Blackburn with Darwen Council and leisure centre users about plans for a split-site replacement.
In August, councillors approved plans for the construction of a new leisure centre, featuring a competition-sized pool, gym and aerobics studio complemented by a sports hall nearly two miles away at Darwen Vale High School.
A demolition survey of the leisure centre is now taking place and is due to be completed in March, when demolition work will begin.
Councillors have reassured concerned residents that the facilities will be the envy of other boroughs when they open in late 2008.
Coun John Milburn, the borough's executive member for leisure and culture said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to bring 21st century sports and leisure facilities to Darwen.
"The cost of refurbishing the old centre was more than building a brand new leisure centre.
"And we have to invest in facilities which can be enjoyed by generations to come."
The facilities will include a fitness suite double the size of the original, with state-of-the art weight-training equipment and plasma screens.
