POLICE are advising people to beware of a 'crash for cash' scam where innocent motorists are being targeted by fraudsters.

The scam works when fraudsters drive around busy roundabouts, road junctions or slip roads and perform an unnecessary and dangerous emergency stop causing the innocent driver to crash into them.

The fraudster then claims on the innocent motorists insurance, often with several accounts of fictitious injuries.

Inspector Claire Holbrook said: "Crash for cash scams are dangerous and illegal and will not be tolerated in Blackburn.

"Criminal gangs involved in this scam are targeting honest and law-abiding motorists and are putting people's lives at risk."

Anyone who believes they have been targeted by this type of scam should contact their insurer immediately.

Alternatively they can contact the police on 0845 1 25 35 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
