A CHARITY set up earlier this year to provide essential furniture to people in need has already helped 26 families.

Darwen Community Furniture Project was launched in June, a reincarnation of the charity forced to close 18 months previously.

A campaign spearheaded by chairman of Darwen Rotary Club Geoff Tolley saw it brought back at a time when poverty is on the rise.

Operating out of a lock-up at Newrad Fisheries in Watery Lane, bosses at the charity have appealed for new donations.

Secretary Rita Billington said: “We are in need of donations of any household items.

“In particular we could do with bedroom furniture, dining tables and chairs, beds, bedding, crockery and cutlery.

“As long as they are in good, working condition and any upholstered items such as sofas and mattresses must have fire labels attached.

“We are unable to accept any white goods.”

The charity helps people in need, such as those on low income or in receipt of benefits.

As with food banks, the Furniture Project works on a referral basis, working with housing needs, social services, health visitors, mind, homeless agencies, local churches, health care professionals, other agencies and self referrals.
