A CLARETS fan has been charged with throwing a bottle at Queen’s Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton during the Championship clash at Turf Moor last month.

John Pounder, of Cedar Avenue, Haslingden is charged with throwing a missile on to a football playing area contrary to the Football Offences Act 1991.

Pounder, 26, is also accused of using threatening words or behaviour and has been bailed to appear at Burnley Magistrates’ Court on November 22.

Lancashire police launched an investigation along with Burnley FC after the plastic drinks bottle was thrown at Mr Barton from the lower section of the James Hargreaves Stand during the second half of the match on October 26.

In a statement, the club said: “Burnley Football Club will not tolerate any aggressive, violent or anti-social behaviour from supporters and will continue to work with the police and the authorities to ensure Turf Moor is a safe and welcoming environment for all.”
