A man who turned up at Burnley police station wanting to be locked up was refused - so he went out and committed a crime.
Burnley magistrates heard how Darren Fell, 34, who needed a bed for the night, surrendered to a warrant he believed was outstanding.
Officers said there wasn't one so he walked into a petrol station, stole some items and then walked up to a patrol car and announced what he had done.
He was promptly arrested.
Fell, of Florence Street, Burnley, admitted theft and breaching a 160 hour community punishment order.
The bench revoked the order and gave him a two month curfew, seven days a week, between 7pm and 7am.
