A POLICE operation in Blackburn has seen nearly 50 cars clamped for failing to have proper road tax.
The three-day operation across the town saw 46 cars clamped in the joint scheme run by the local police and the DVLA.
Cars were targetted which had been brought to the DVLA's attention thanks to its hotline which allows members of the public to call and report illegal vehicles.
Police officers have revealed that of the 46 cars, six per cent had fraudulent tax discs - relating to other vehicles, nine per cent had no tax at all, 26 per cent were more than six months out of date, and 59 per cent were less than six months out of date.
Cars were then impounded if the necessary action was not taken by owners.
Police Community Support Officer Nigel Brooke said: "It was a very successful operation. We have worked closely with the DVLA and we are actively targetting those vehicles that have been rung in by members of the public to the DVLA hotline.
"The DVLA and the police get a lot of people phoning in complaining about untaxed vehicles."
