A POP-up skate park is to open in Clitheroe to provide youngsters with somewhere to skate during the winter months.

The ramps, which will be provided by The Grand, will be set up in the St Mary’s Centre in York Street every Saturday and Sunday from November 16.

The Grand, which owns the popular outdoor skate park in the castle grounds, helped run a similar scheme last year to combat safety fears at the site during the winter.

The new facility will provide skaters with a safe and weather-proof facility.

Three two-hour sessions will be held a week, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm and 7pm to 9pm on Saturdays and 4.30pm to 6.30pm on Sundays for 22 weeks.

Outside of the sessions, the ramps will be taken down and stored away allowing other activities to take place.

The organisers might have to find another venue if they want to run the scheme next year because the St Mary’s Centre is in the final stages of being sold to the Lancaster Foundation by The Church of England for an undisclosed fee.

Andrew Whitehead, curate at St Mary Magdalene Church in Clitheroe, which runs the St Mary’s Centre, said: “It’s a fantastic community project that provides young people in Clitheroe with a safe space during the winter.

“It’s a wonderful space and it was very popular last year.

“It’s a much better alternative than them using the outdoor facility when the adverse weather could make conditions very difficult and dangerous.

“The ramps can be taken down and stored away after every session which allows other groups enough space to continue with the activities with no disruption during the week.

“We are holding more sessions this year and I really hope that they are as popular and well attended as last year.”
