DRIVING rain put a dampener on Hyndburn’s annual bonfire, organisers said.

Just 800 people braved the weather to attend the bonfire, held at Accrington Cricket Club, on Saturday. The event usually attracts around 4,000. The rain also caused delays of around an hour as Rotary club members struggled to light the bonfire.

Rotary Club president Jacquie Baldwin said: “Although it was a pity the event was badly affected by the conditions, praise should go to those 800 people who supported the bonfire.”

About 60 Rotarians from three clubs, Accrington, Church and Oswaldtwistle, and Great Harwood and Rishton, were involved in preparing the bonfire, stewarding the event, serving food, and cleaning up the next day.

Jacquie added: “I appreciate all the help and hard work that Rotarians and friends of Rotary gave to this major Hyndburn event.”
