THIRTY firefighters were called to tackle a blaze that destroyed a Bacup business and damaged several cars.

Crews from Bacup and Accrington were called to a tyre fitting unit, in Rockcliffe Road, at around 11pm on Monday evening.

The commercial unit was destroyed, and the fire spread to another, which contained cars.

The second unit and some cars were damaged, a spokesman for the fire service said.

He added: “We are investigating the cause but at the minute we can’t get access. We had three fire engines and around 30 firefighters in attendance.

“A crew from Accrington came over with an aerial ladder platform too.”

Crews were expected to remain at the scene throughout the day yesterday, cooling gas cylinders, damping down the units, making the unit safe, and investigating the fire’s cause.
