A BURNLEY business park had unveiled plans to expand to meet a growing demand for space.

Nelson firm Barnfield Construction wants to build three new units at Enterprise Business Park, in Liverpool Road, Lowerhouse.

The developer described the proposals, which also include a new access road, as ‘a new development of high urban design quality, and a real sense of place’.

A statement from Barnfield’s planning agent, Frank Belshaw Building Surveyors, said the planned expansion represented a ‘sizable initial, infrastructure investment’.

It said: “Part of the site has a well-established industrial use, the existing buildings are in a poor state of repair, badly-insulated and are not suitable for present day modern industries’ needs.

“There are numerous, nearby, established, industrial estates, with little or no chance of expansion due to the lack of available land. It is envisaged, that this particular site will attract some of the existing users on nearby estates, whose expansion plans can now be realised.

“This in turn will release the smaller units on these estates for start-up businesses.”

If given the green light, the new units would be 1,552 square metres, 4,347 square metres and 6,149 square metres.

A Burnley Council spokesman said: “It’s great to see demand for extra space from companies in Burnley that want to expand.

“We want growing businesses to stay in the borough, invest in the local economy and create new jobs.

“Burnley has been named Britain’s most enterprising area.

“In order to encourage that spirit of enterprise further we need to be able to offer companies business units of all sizes that meet their needs, whether they are firms already here and want to grow or if those that want to move into the area.”
