A DVD entitled "Ready Steady Grow" found by police had nothing to do with red tomatoes or green peppers.
Blackburn magistrates heard that police, who had executed an arrest warrant at a Darwen house, also discovered a cannabis cultivation system.
The DVD gave step by step instructions on growing the drug.
Simon Lang, 18, of Crewdson Street, Darwen, pleaded guilty to cultivating four cannabis plants and abstracting electricity.
He was made subject to community supervision for 18 months and ordered to pay £60 costs.
The magistrates ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs, the growing equipment and the DVD.
Neil White, prosecuting, said Lang had told police he was growing cannabis for his own pain relief purposes.
