COUNCIL taxpayers who think they could do a better job with local government finance than their elected representatives have been given the chance to set their own budget for Lancashire.

The county council has launched an online budget calculator, available until December, where people can create their own budget.

The calculator will help people think about the services that they believe are the most important and try to balance the books.

Senior managers and cabinet members will be working together to develop budget proposals to save £300m in the next four years.

People using the calculator can leave comments and suggestions that will be taken into account.

County finance boss David Borrow said: “Setting the budget is extremely challenging as we have to balance competing demands and requirements in the face of a very difficult financial settlement. The calculator allows people to experience some of this for themselves.”
