THOUSANDS of people are expected to brave the cold to enjoy firework displays across East Lancashire.

The annual Witton Park bonfire is the crowning jewel in Blackburn’s events calendar.

It is going ahead as normal this year, despite fears around the recent wet weather and a whopping 10,000 people are expected to attend.

There will be a fairground, live roadshow from The Bee radio station and a dazzling firework display.

Norman Walker, of Blackburn Lions which organises the event with Blackburn Round Table and Rotary Club, said: “Luckily, it hasn’t rained for long enough to waterlog the ground and so everything has run smoothly up until this point. We’re hoping there isn’t storm-like conditions but we will continue with the celebrations whatever the weather – rain has never stopped us before and we always have a great turn out.”

The fun begins at 5.30pm on Saturday and the fire will be lit at 7.30pm, half an hour ahead of the firework display.

In the Ribble Valley, the popular Clitheroe Community Bonfire returns phoenix-like from the ashes.

Cancelled last year due to health and safety concerns, the celebration on Clitheroe Castle field has returned.

All attendees must buy a ticket before the event on Saturday to ensure entry to the grounds. Only 5,000 tickets are available and it is estimated that 13,000 people attended the last official bonfire in 2011.

Tickets can be bought from Lidl, Shaw Bridge Street, and Dawsons, King Street, and are £5 for adults and £2 for children.

Elsewhere in the region, Burnley will host a bonfire and firework display for the first time in five years.

The fire at Towneley Hall, will be lit by England women’s goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis at 7.15pm on Tuesday and the fun fair begins at 6.30pm.

Tickets are £2 each and can be purchased from Burnley Mechanics.
