A 24-YEAR-OLD man who denied any involvement in an offence of criminal damage did a U-turn when he rang up two weeks later and told police he remembered he was responsible.
Blackburn magistrates heard Kevin Wilcock felt bad about the offence and did not want it hanging over him.
And chairman of the magistrates Terry Young said Wilcock’s honesty had earned his ‘admiration’.
“Thank you for being honest and owning up,” said Mr Young. “I acknowledge this would not have come to light if you had not done so.”
Wilcock, of Great Bolton Street, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to damaging a front door window belonging to Alexander Bennie.
He was ordered to pay £123 compensation.
Jonathan Taylor, defending, said Wilcock accepted he had tried to break into the flat, which he knew was empty, because he was homeless and needed somewhere to sleep.
