A UNIVERSITY will be affected by industrial action as lecturers go on strike tomorrow.

The national strike action against higher education employers will see classes cancelled across the UK as staff walk out in protest at a pay offer of 1 per cent.

Strike action will affect the University of Central Lancashire and the organisation has spoken of its disappointment at the news.

However a spokesman for the University Centre at Blackburn College said the centre was not anticipating strike action and was not advising students of any changes.

A spokesman for UCLan, which has campuses in Preston and Burnley, said it had received notification that 24 hour industrial action would take place.

Tomorrow will see members of the Universities and College Union, UNISON and Unite take their first co-ordinated strike action in a row over pay. The unions said they were disappointed that the employers had refused talks to try and divert Thursday's walkout, but said they were still prepared to meet for eleventh hour talks.

UCLan said it was hoping to minimise any disruption to students.

A spokesman for UCLan said: “The University has received disappointing news that the Universities and College Union, Unison and Unite will take 24 hours industrial action in the form of a strike.

“The action will commence on Thursday and will affect universities across the UK including the University of Central Lancashire.

“On the day, we are confident that the majority of academic staff and support staff at UCLan will be working normally, but we believe a number of staff affiliated to all three unions will be taking industrial action.

“The university is determined to minimise the strike’s impact on students by communicating any changes to the academic timetable in advance of the strike.

“Students will be alerted to the cancellation of lectures/seminars and other timetabled sessions.

“We will ensure that students are not disadvantaged in their studies as a result of the industrial action.”
