AMATEUR bakers will be putting their cakes to the test this weekend to help raise funds for a headstone for a tragic two-year-old.

Little Harrison Upton, of St Mary’s Avenue, Barnoldswick, died in July 2011 when he was found suffocated in his bedroom.

The Barnoldswick Bake-Off is now seeking to raise funds to help his parents, Sam and Nathan, pay for a headstone for Harrison’s grave.

Katie McQuade Collins, one of three organisers of the event, along with Jenny Purcell and Julie Hilton, said: “Harrison was a truly beautiful, amazing, perfect little boy who was always full of life, smiles and giggles. The reason for the Barnoldswick Bake-Off is to raise enough money to provide this little angel with a headstone. Since Harrison passed away buying a headstone for his grave has just not been possible for his parents Sam and Nathan.

“This is a very costly item and unfortunately they just don’t have the funds to do this.

“Their wish to give their beautiful angel the perfect resting place that he very much deserves and this will also provide Harrison’s family a beautiful grave for them to visit on a regular basis.”

Entries for Saturday’s bake-off remain open.

Participants can pick up an entry form from Elegant Hair and Nail Salon in Newtown, Barnoldswick, and pay the £2 entry fee. There will be prizes for first, second and third place in the adult and children’s category, with the first prize for adults an evening meal and overnight stay at the Alma Inn.

The event takes place in the Town Square from 9am to 4pm, with the last entry for cakes at 11.30am.

The judging panel includes Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson, town council chairman Ken Hartley and Rev Diane Weaver, vicar at Holy Trinity Church.
