STAFF at a Blackburn supermarket have become stars of the small screen in a fly-on-the-wall series.

Iceland Foods: Life in the Freezer Cabinet, which airs tonight, follows CEO Malcolm Walker, a self-made millionaire from Huddersfield who launched his first frozen food store in 1970 because, he says, he was sick of working at Woolworths.

The documentary also explores aspects of company life, focusing on everyone from shopfloor staff to buyers and the Willy Wonka-style creatives dreaming up freeze-friendly treats to rival the popularity of the store’s signature dish – the donner kebab pizza.

Blackburn’s Ewood branch takes a starring role, not least because of the bubbly personalities of shopfloor workers, Jackie O’Garr and Jeanette Walmsley, who both live in Darwen and go above and beyond to keep customers happy.

The first show last week portrayed the pair as firm friends passionate about the firm.

Staff at Blackburn were told about the documentary a few months before filming began last October and according to Jackie, were excited to be filmed.

She said: “My only concern was what my Lancashire accent would sound like on TV!

“When I sat down to watch it on Monday, I was ready to cringe but when I saw myself, I just thought, that’s me, that’s who I am.

“It was bizarre to see myself on television and I wasn’t expecting to be featured so much.”

Jackie said: “Pretty quickly you got used to them being there and forgot about them. You are greeting customers and chatting as usual and don’t think about the cameras.

“People have been coming in and asking for me and Jeanette after seeing us on telly and everyone has been saying how much fun it looked and how our personalities came through.

“We’ve also noticed more people coming in and asking for job applications. It’s not surprising. It really is a great place to work. It’s so much fun.”

Episode two will air tonight at 9pm on BBC2.
