COUNCILLORS have called for more safety measures to be put in place on a dangerous stretch of road where a 20-year-old man died at the weekend.

Market trader Oliver Jones was killed after losing control of his Citroen Saxo on a right hand bend of the A59 near Sawley.

He suffered serious head injuries after colliding with a stone bridge and died at the scene.

Coun Michael Ranson, who represents the area and has campaigned for greater safety measures on the 60mph stretch, said: “There have been things done in the past to try and make it safer but there are still accidents happening on that stretch of road.

“It is a very fast stretch of road and I think we need to look at what can be done to alleviate the problems. We need to find a solution to stop accidents happening.”

Another local councillor, Gary Scott, said: “There have been numerous accidents over the year and the highways department at Lancashire County Council has put measures in place to try and make it safer. There have been signs erected to try and warn people about the bends on the road.”

Mr Jones was driving home to Settle in North Yorkshire when the accident happened at 4.50am on Saturday.

His mother Carol said: “Oliver was my only son, he was my rock. He was well liked and very popular and recently returned to his first love football and played for the first team at Settle United.

“Oliver started going to Settle and Skipton market from an early age with his dad, and 18 months ago he started working with him full-time. He was excellent at selling due to his personality.

“His main passion was to socialise with his friends, so the hole he leaves will never be filled.

“He will be sadly missed.”

Clitheroe Road was closed for six hours to allow for an investigation and for debris to be removed.

Sgt Mick Young from the road policing unit said: “At this stage we do not believe any other vehicles were involved but an investigation is under way and I would appeal to anybody that witnessed this collision to contact Lancashire Police on 101.

“A police family liaison officer is supporting Oliver’s family at this difficult time.”
