A MEDICAL records clerk who lost her husband to lung cancer has urged women to ‘bin their bras’ as part of a new campaign.
Julie Talamantes, 54, who works at the BMI Beardwood Hospital, Blackburn, wants to raise cash for Against Breast Cancer, a charity which funds pioneering research into the disease.
The campaign urges women to donate their unwanted bras, by depositing them in a special bin. For every tonne of bras donated, the charity will receive £1,000, and the bras will be shipped to developing countries for recycling.
The bin will be at Beardwood Hospital until Christmas.
Julie said: “Cancer has affected me in so many ways.
“First I lost my best friend to breast cancer.
“She was only 38. And just three years ago, my husband, Vincent, died of lung cancer.
“We’d been married just a year before he died.
“On top of all this, I lost my cousin to ovarian cancer. She was just 50.”
Suffering these losses has made Julie determined to help others by raising money for cancer charities.
She has previously raised £1,000 for Cancer Research, through a variety of activities with her daughters including sponsored skydives, coffee mornings and cake sales.
