WITNESSES saw a car mount the pavement of a town centre street and watched as police chased a man down the road.
The incident happened on Church Street, Blackburn yesterday afternoon after police stopped a blue Nissan at around 1.30pm.
The car had mounted the kerb and the left front tyre blew before a man got out of the vehicle and ran down Church Street. The police chased him on foot.
Eye-witness Alex Martindale from Blackburn said: “I was flabbergasted.
“The front left tyre blew up and he just got out and ran. A couple of bystanders tried to help.
“You don’t usually see this level of spectacle in Blackburn town centre.
“There were a few people milling around.”
Police said a man was arrested outside the White Bull at the bottom of Church Street on suspicion of stealing a vehicle.
A police spokeswoman said: “The male arrested was a 19-year-old from Rochdale and we are now investigating whether the car was stolen and, if so, where it was stolen from.”
