JAKE Berry, MP for Darwen and Rossendale, has announced who has been crowned the areas’ best independent shops.
Minerva Crafts in Atlas Road, Darwen and greengrocers the Country Garden in Bank Street, Rawtenstall have each won the titles.
More than 6,000 votes were cast in the competition involving 200 businesses.
Minerva Crafts sells dress making fabric and crochet materials alongside other craft supplies and was founded in Blackburn 16 years ago. The company employs 24 people, including six apprentices.
Vicki Ormerod, co-owner of business, said: “We’re very happy about winning the competition. I think people voted for us because there’s nothing else like us in Lancashire. The product range we offer is very extensive and our service is second to none.”
Mr Berry said: “The competition was really close but Minerva Crafts and the Country Garden are very worthy winners.
“I’d like to put on record my thanks to all those who voted and supported our independent retailers and, of course, the 200 businesses that took part.”
The prizes for the winning shops include professional marketing sessions and a tour of Parliament and lunch with Mr Berry.
