SCOUTING bosses in Clitheroe have unveiled their year-long plans to mark 100 years of ‘dib dib dobbing’.

Clitheroe District Scouts, which is made up of 550 youngsters and 160 adult volunteers, will kick off the main celebrations with a Founder’s Day Service at St Mary Magdalene’s Church.

This will be the first time the area’s Scouts have marked Founder’s Day, the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell who established the movement.

The main programme of events will continue in April for the St George’s Day Parade through the town.

Last year’s event saw more than 500 young people join the march.

A special week-long centenary camp at Waddow Hall will be staged in June ahead of the first staging of a ‘gang show’ in Clitheroe for 14 years in November.

The event, which will be held at the St Mary’s Centre in Church Street, will see Scouts re-enacting scenes from the past 100 years of scouting history and from across the globe.

The variety show will include songs, sketches, musical numbers and drama, with tickets going on sale in March.

Clitheroe Scout’s district commissioner Ian MacDonald said: “I think it’s very important for us to be holding these major events next year because it’s such a fantastic achievement that we are celebrating.

“It’s amazing that scouting in and around Clitheroe has lasted so long and we are still doing a lot of the same things that Scouts did in 1914.

“Everyone that is involved in Scouts in the area are really looking forward to next year and I hope that it will be a year of events that people remember for many years to come.”

Clitheroe District Scouts, which also includes Ribchester, Gisburn, Waddington and Sabden, include nine Beaver groups, 12 Cub packs, nine Scout groups, two Explorer units and one Network group.

An extra Explorer group, which caters for 14 to 17-year-olds, will be formed in February.
