LANCASHIRE people are being urged to stay safe this Christmas.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue chiefs have issued guidelines to avoid home dangers during the festive season.

People are being urged to check fairy lights and switch them off when going to bed. Don't overload sockets or let bulbs touch anything that can burn easily like paper.

The dangers of candles, decorations and fireworks at this time of year have also been highlighted.

The warning comes after the Lancashire Telegraph launched its Turn It Off campaign to encourage people to save lives, save energy and save money by not leaving appliances switched on and unattended or on standby.

The campaign was backed by MPs and fire chiefs and highlighted the fire risks. Since 2003, 2,414 fires across the county have been started by electrical appliances.

Peter Holland, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer, said: "By following simple tips, hopefully we can all enjoy a peaceful and fire safe time."
