Spinner Monty Panesar took five wickets on his Ashes debut as England bowled out Australia for 244 on day one of the third Ashes Test at the WACA.

Panesar became the first England spin bowler to take five wickets in an innings at Perth.

The Northamptonshire left-arm spinner claimed the scalps of Justin Langer, Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne and Brett Lee and returned figures of five for 92.

Panesar's absence from the opening two Tests was blamed by many as a major reason behind England's defeats in Brisbane and Adelaide.

That view was underlined through the night with Panesar claiming four wickets after being preferred to spin rival Ashley Giles as Australia slumped on the opening day after winning the toss and deciding to bat first.

It was an impressive response from the tourists, who also dropped Burnley's James Anderson to give Lancashire team-mate Sajid Mahmood his first outing of the series, following the heartbreak of their final day defeat at the Adelaide Oval.
