DARWEN’S twinning with a Gambian city will be officially unveiled at a ceremony next week.
An event will take place at Darwen Aldridge Community Academy on Wednesday, from 7pm to 9pm.
The twinning was arranged following successful charity missions to the African country by youth football club Darwen Spartans, in conjunction with charity Football Gambia.
The ceremony will include some words about the project and the club’s involvement, followed by a short DVD of the project work in the villages and the events held.
There will also be a ‘question and answer’ session followed by the unveiling of a sign. There will then be a celebration event at The Bridgewater in Church Street, with African music and a buffet.
Darreners have been asked to go along and be a part of the historic event.
Darwen Spartans president Mark Atkinson said: “I do hope the people of Darwen will support the unveiling of the twinning for the two towns.
“It brings a formal relationship between the two towns, who have been working closely with Darwen Spartans, Football Gambia and Darwen Town Council, to this point.
“In January, a party from Darwen will go out and formally twin with Lamin, when several young people will travel to support football and community work.
“We are all very excited and I am so proud of all our partners and especially the many young people who have committed to this project.”DARWEN’S twinning with a Gambian city will be officially unveiled at a ceremony next week.
