YEAR seven pupils from St Augustine’s High School, in Billington, collected food as part of the annual harvest festival.
Youngsters took cans, packets, bottles and fresh food into school and the produce was delivered to food banks including the Thomas Drop-In Centre at St Anne’s House in Blackburn.
Headteacher Michael Wright said: “Once again, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our pupils.
“Local food banks are such a good idea and they are a very effective way to help people in the area.
“While many of the charities we support focus on the extreme poverty of the third world, it is also important that our children realise that there are families closer to home that are not as fortunate as them.
“Their response has been fantastic."
During the collection, the school chaplaincy team led an assembly based on the Catholic Agency For Overseas Development’s Big Share campaign, which encourages young people to consider families around the world who do not have enough to eat on a daily basis.
