A BLACKBURN College student died after being hit by a 4x4 being driven "far below" accepted standards, a jury heard.

Apprentice electrician Jonathan Hart, 17, died at the scene during the rush hour on a wet, dark January morning, Preston Crown Court was told.

Calvin Wright, 20, of Southport, denies causing death by dangerous driving. He told police: "I didn't see him until it was too late."

Witnesses saw the pickup overtaking traffic at an estimated 50mph in a 30mph zone and at one point under-taking, and travelling on a pavement, the court was told.

Learner driver Mr Hart, from Harrington Road, Chorley, was on his way to work at DTJ electricals, Leyland, when his 49cc Aprilia scooter, collided with a 2.5 litre Toyota pickup.

The crash happened on a mini roundabout at the junction of Church Road and Canberra Road, Leyland.

Mark Lamberty, prosecuting, alleged Wright's driving fell "far below" the standard of a com-petent driver.

He said: "We say it was the sort of driving which takes your breath away."

Wright told police he became aware of a scooter turning right in front of his car and braked but could not prevent the collision.
