A TWENTY-five-year-old Burnley man is in a critical condition after he was involved in a collision with a car.

Anthony Sykes, of Cog Street, had just got off a bus in Westgate, Burnley, when he was struck by a blue convertible Vauxhall Astra at about 9.30pm on Saturday.

He suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to Burnley General Hospital, where he was being treated in intensive care.

A police spokesman said: "We were called by a member of the public who saw the incident happen.

"Mr Sykes suffered extensive injuries, but it is those to his head which are life threatening.

"We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the accident to get in touch with us so we can try and piece together exactly what has happened."

Police said the driver of the Astra, who escaped uninjured, tested negative for alcohol when breathalysed at the scene.

Westgate was closed for several hours after the incident while an accident investigation took place.

A police investigation is continuing and officers are appealing for witnesses.
