A TOTAL of 30 new apprentices this week are starting work with East Lancashire’s two main local authorities.

Twenty started work at Blackburn with Darwen borough across its whole range of departments.

Ten young people launched careers in social care looking after older people and those with dementia in Lancashire County Council's residential homes.

The newcomers will be able to earn while they learn during placements at their chosen authority.

The new apprentices at Blackburn with Darwen brings the total number at the council to 45.

The 16 to 24-year-olds are on two year contracts and will study for relevant qualifications.

Council leader Kate Hollern said: “We know that getting a job is still proving to be very difficult and it is even harder for our young people coming out of school and college.

“They do not have much experience in the work place and our apprenticeship scheme is aimed at helping them get a foot on the ladder.

“Our apprentices bring a new skills and ideas.”

The new county council apprentices come from Chorley, Colne, Lancaster, Morecambe, Preston and Skelmersdale.

They will work in residential homes in Lancaster and Morecambe; Adlington, Preston, Skelmersdale, Thornton, Clitheroe, Barnoldswick and Colne.

Coun Matthew Tomlinson said: "This is the first group of apprentices through our new recruitment process and we hope to have many more in the future. “As part of their two-year apprenticeship, they'll get support from experienced staff and training.

"We're pleased to be able to recruit new carers who will help and support others, while providing opportunities to gain new skills and experience."
