A TEENAGER caught over the limit on a goped in the early hours told a court he had been trying to get away from family problems.

Paul Chester, 18, had been seen on the scooter in the middle of the road by police. He smelled of drink when they went to speak to him and was later found to be more than twice the limit, Burnley Magistrates heard.

Chester, of Coal Clough Lane, Burnley, admitted driving with excess alcohol on December 3. The defendant, already subject to a probation order made in October, was given 12 months supervision and banned for 20 months.

Wendy Chappell, prosecuting, told the court police spotted the defendant on Venice Avenue in Burnley. Chester had previous convictions, but no similar offences.

The defendant, who was not legally represented, told the court he realised it was a silly thing to do. He said he had a lot of problems going on that night and just wanted to get away.
