A SCHOOL has been inspired by an Olympic star to introduce a sporting activity with a difference – fencing The deputy head of Rishton Norden High School Deborah Murray, mum of Olympian Samantha Murray, who gained a silver medal in modern pentathlon at the London 2012 games, suggested the sport, which is one of the five events.
The teacher was motivated by her daughter’s success, and love of the sport, to introduce fencing to youngsters at the school’s summer camp sessions.
Alongside activities such as musical theatre and archery, youngsters have learned swordfighting techniques, such as how to foil, lunge, parry and riposte.
Mrs Murray said: “There’s been a real enthusiasm for the fencing, so we are now going to introduce regular sessions every Wednesday afternoon.
“I have had an interest in the sport for years through Samantha, so I brought it in to the summer school.
“The pupils are really excited about it becoming a regular event.”
