AN annual cross-country run started with a bang for its 30th anniversary.

A 105mm artillery gun signalled the start of the five-and-a-half mile run around Stoneyhurst College and the surrounding Ribble Valley.

The weapon was wheeled out especially for the event and 30 former pupils took part to celebrate the race's birthday.

The oldest to take part was 68 with ages ranging from the early 20s.

Every year about 200 pupils from the independent school, between Hurst Green and Clitheroe, finish the course.

This year a giant screen was set up to relay live pictures of the runners from a helicopter.

The college's marketing manager, Johnathan Hewat, said there were a few anxious faces as the gun was loaded.

He said: "It was loud. There was a lot of anticipation as people waited for it to go off. It was impressive stuff."

The gun was provided by the 103rd Lancashire Artillery Volunteers.
